on my facebook page, under "about me" it says,
"life is a marathon, it's not a sprint. trust me, i know."

and it theory that sounds great right? people acquire things (some bigger than others) at a different rate (diplomas, relationships, houses, kids, flat screen televisions). you can't be racing the next guy to see who does what first.

but i guess i was thinking about the manute bol death (random how impactful that was to me) and the talk about kobe bryants legacy (how does he rank compared to the greatest of all time, etc). it got me thinking...

i mean think about YOUR legacy. if you were to go out tomorrow, then what? how did you live your life? are you proud of your actions? what about all those things you wanted to do but never got around to?

i mean none of us know how long we'll live. if we get hit by a car tomorrow or contract some weird disease like manute bol. is it enough to say, "oh i plan to do this by this time and this by this time and... but what if we don't live to reach those times? we'll bring those to do lists to the afterlife?

so what should we do? sprint at all times? ok maybe not sprint but we should live life with purpose. maybe should all listen to the great quote by coach wooden,
"be quick, but don't hurry".

maybe thats a good mantra to live life by?

coach wooden

preface this by saying i'm a huge trojan fan and normally i boo most things from westwood. but not diddy reese. and definitely not coach wooden.

here are some quotes from a very wise man.

-Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.
-Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.
-Don't measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability.

and my absolute favorite...

-It's what you learn after you know it all that counts.

edit: apparently coach wooden just passed away. he was 99. rip coach.
The difference between false memories and true ones is the same as for jewels: it is always the false ones that look the most real, the most brilliant.

Stop and think twice. Don't make life decisions based on what you want now.

Join those who walk with tears in their eyes. Avoid those who have never shed a tear.

fake it

are you familiar with the term "fake it til you make it"?

musicians use it (oftentimes rappers). you know, the poor kid off the streets with his debut single. but how is he rockin ice, makin it rain, and sittin on dubs in his very first music video? well the ice is rented, the money aint his, and the dubs belong to the record execs. by showing wealth, these execs hope that this "baller" attitude translates into success for the sales of the album and the upcoming tour.

its also used by depressed people (thats a negative word, lets use "down on their luck". ok also negative but still, it sounds better). for them, waking up every day with a negative attitude normally begets more negativeness. and with all the negativity, its tough to have positive results.

so they smile. there they go with their tweets and status updates like life is a fucking joyride. the tough thing is that they may be (and most probably are) dying inside. and even though it probably took a good 5 minutes to muster up that first fake smile, each subsequent one becomes easier and easier.

but the key here is the negative energy is replaced by fake positive energy. ok thats not as good as real positive energy but its better than negative energy. i mean think about it. pour negative energy into anything - work, school, a relationship, a workout....what do you expect your results to be? its tough to get positive results this way.

so fake it. wake up every day and pretend that everythings going peachy keen even when they aren't. and that negative spiral slowly (but surely) turns into a crawl upwards towards normalcy. and one day you won't have to fake it anymore.

so there's no guarantee that you will be rolling on a bentley or sitting on 22's. but smile, and show off that grill. who knows?

being the best

more inspiring quotes from my favorite old spanish portuguese guy:

"In love, no one can harm anyone else; we are each of us responsible for our own feelings and cannot blame others for what we feel."

"The universe only makes sense if you can share it with someone."

"It is the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting."

"Only mediocrity is safe. Take your risks and be the best.

There is suffering in life, and there are defeats. No one can avoid them. But it's better to lose some of the battles in the struggles for your dreams than to be defeated without ever knowing what you're fighting for."
will smith once said, "You are who you associate with. Look around at your five closest friends and that's who you are. If you don't want to be that person, you know what you gotta do."

think about that for a second. think about the 5 people who you spend most of your time with. think about the good things about them, the bad. their goals, dreams, desires. are they in line with what you want? what you really want in life? if not, well yeah, listen to the fresh prince.
" Each day is a special gift from God, and while life may not always be fair, you must never allow the pains, hurdles, and handicaps of the moment to poison your attitude and plans for yourself and your future. You can never win when you wear the ugly cloak of self-pity, and the sour sound of whining will certainly frighten away any opportunity for success. Never again. There is a better way."

thank you god for everything. i know I am truly blessed. i realize everyone has tough times but i really believe its all part of the plan.

still hopeful

so its valentines day and i'm single. first time i've spent the 14th of feb single in some time. i remember before, i would go to soup plantation with ray and earl on valentines day to commiserate.

i think it would be easy for me to be jaded or cynical about love, especially during valentines day. but i won't be. deep down under my harsh exterior, i'm a romantic...who loves love.

for all you lovers out there, hope you have a great weekend. and for all you singles out there....stay hopeful.

"To a warrior, there is no such thing as impossible love. He does not allow himself to be intimidated by silence, or by rejection. He knows that - behind the icy mask people wear - there is a heart of fire.

That is why the warrior risks more than others. He tirelessly seeks a person's love - even if this means hearing, many times over, the word 'no', returning home defeated, feeling rejected in body and soul.

A warrior does not allow himself to be overwhelmed in his search for his needs. Without love, he is nothing.
