giving up something

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
here we are again people, its lent. when people announce to the whole world what they are giving up. but really, what are they replacing with what they are giving up?

does it make sense to give up coffee and increase your intake of soda?

or give up facebook and use myspace more?

or give up fried chicken and just eat more pizza?

why do people do it? why have i done it? i realize now its more selfish. its not giving something up for god. its not a sacrifice done that makes us more spiritual. oftentimes its something done selfishly, so we have something cool to announce on our blog or our status update.

or maybe mandaya is right and lent is just another excuse for catholics to make another set of resolutions that they weren't able to keep during new years.

EDIT
reading this again, i want to make it clear that i am not AGAINST giving stuff up for lent. its a catholic tradition that many have done for years. i just want to say that people should think about what they are giving up and why they are. for example, giving up coffee is one thing. but what about giving up coffee at starbucks and donating the money you save to charity at the end of the 40 days? that to me is a combination of sacrifice and philanthropy. then again, this is all just my opinion, thats why i'm writing it in my blog.

1994: freshman year college: 135

1999: graduated college: 200

2002: la marathon: 140

2009: after pi and ny: 175

i have noticed my weight start to fluctuate in the wrong direction. seriously, just didn't like how i looked in the pictures. i have always been sort of a weight fluctuator but i'm trying to nip this in the bud now. i think ideally, as a marathon runner, etc. my weight is best around 145-150. thats my goal. so how do i get there?

right now its a good thing that i'm sorta between jobs. i can work out alot and watch what i eat. the working out/running is really picking up with the la marathon in march. so i'm upping my mileage and workouts for that. the big issue for me is diet. (like it is for most people)

rr found this online and shared it with me. i have been trying to follow it. so far, so good.

His advice is fairly self-explanatory and nothing extraordinary:

Breakfast. Gluten and wheat free cereal, sliced almonds and almond or rice milk. (If you don't have the sensitivities I have look for a high fiber cereal. At least 4 grams of fiber.) I will also have a whole fruit smoothie or an apple, banana or orange. Green tea.
Lunch. A salad with grilled chicken or fish, vegetables, raw nuts and dried fruit. I will also have fruit afterwards.
Dinner. Grilled or baked fish or chicken with vegetables. Sometimes I'll have brown rice. Again, plan ahead. If you get hungry between meals have a plan... My snack foods are dried fruit, whole almonds or whole cashews. All natural, raw foods energy bars. Raw vegetables like carrots and celery. Whole fruit or whole fruit smoothies.
He does offer a couple good nuggets of unusual information and advice:

If you feel like you need electrolytes coconut water has the highest concentration of electrolytes.
I feel if your diet is consistent and well balanced (think long term rather than short term) it isn't so important what you eat right before you play or the night before because your energy levels and recovery will be on target from the quality of your previous three to seven days of meals.
I feel there are two areas of life that are greatly overlooked, misunderstood or not credited with their importance in our ability to reach our optimal levels of performance and also our greatest quality of everyday life. Diet and sleep.
I believe that eating six smaller meals a day is more healthful than eating three larger meals a day.
When we're traveling the snack foods can be extremely important to take with because you often will get stuck at a restaurant or hotel without good options.

i'm relieved more than anything. we beat ucla.

buboy was right. the analysis of oscar de la hoya out of his closet was spot on. manny didn't let oscar set. oscar couldnt pull off any combos (not with any power at least). game over. i've seen some people say that they are proud to be filipino. just b/c of the fight? was there pride before?

but seriously. did anyone expect that outcome? maybe someone predicted a manny win but no way that decisive. what's next? I'm hoping for hatton. margarito is too big and floyds d is too tight. the filipinos vs the brits. they can both make fun of one anothers accents. it was very cool to go to lawrys with missi on sunday. they had just posted the pac 10 and big 10 banners in order of finish. so i took a cool picture of the psu and usc banners. and i had to rep usc by ordering the beef bowl cut. too. much. meat.
you know what work the day after thanksgiving feels like? it feels like back when you were n college at the library on a friday or saturday night: as much as you should be there and know you have important stuff to do, just knowing that other people are having more fun than you at that exact moment makes you feel totally unmotivated. thats me today. well a combination of that feeling and just really bloated.

hope you guys had excellent black fridays. (why does it gotta be black?)

fight on! beat the irish.

i finally saw tropic thunder on dvd (thanks blau!) since i'm perhaps the last person in the world to see it, i don't think anything i'll say is a spoiler (well if you haven't seen it, stop reading!)

anyhow, i thought the big 3 stole the show. no not jack black, ben stiller, and downey jr. i'm talking bill hader (btw, am i the only one who always gets him and will forte mixed up?), matthew mcconaughey, and tc. (will post this on youtube even though i know it'll be taken off a few hours later).

running a 5k this sunday at la canada. after signing up, i realized that the day before is the notre dame game. its just a 5k? maybe i'll just race it hung over.

happy thanksgivings everyone! for the first time ever, i'll be working the friday AFTER thanksgiving. ugh.

caught wicked again with missi on friday night. teal wicks who plays elpheba was awesome. the woman who played g(a)linda wasn't as good as the one we saw the first time (laura woyasz). all in all, its a bit troublesome that i knew all the words.

the next day i planned to run 24 miles. didn't happen. i got umm...10 in? the marathon in 3 weeks is gonna hurt. really bad.

to compound my not running enough, kevin and i hung out for the az game. we drank jager bombs. we ate fried chicken. we ate nachos. then we proceeded to take turns slapping one another in the face to see if that would help us sober up. not sure if it worked.

and sunday, i was just useless. utterly useless. it takes me over 24 hours to recover from drinking. i didn't leave the house the whole day. didn't work out, didn't see the sun. had two fantasy basketball drafts and watched way too much football. i don't even know if i brushed my teeth or showered.

on the bright side, i got an A on my project management midterm last week!

what is everyone upto for halloween?

what i'll miss

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
going to india, i was thinking of what i'll miss:

sports-i don't think anyone in india cares about brett favre, ryan grant, or steve smith. maybe some cricket if i'm lucky.

working out-dont think i'll have the chance to run or hit the weights at india. probably don't think i'll have a gym to go to and i don't want to take my chances running over there.

meat-the hotels where we are staying are all vegetarian. this actually might not be such a bad thing b/c i actually dig indian cuisine.

hot chicks-seriously

the weather-i like la weather. its hot but its dry. for india, its hot but i have to bring my umbrella. u have got to be kidding me.

but what i'll miss most is my friends and family. i know, i'm very sentimental. but its true.
