so kevstine, deb and me went out with cece since she is in town for the holidays. started pretty tame, over at marco's for some peruvian. i had the pollo saltado (salty chicken). afterwards we went to brass monkey, our goto spot for the karaoke.
so it starts business as usual. its pretty packed so we are just kinda standing on the sidelines. we notice an empty table so i ask the waitress if we can sit there. unfortunately its reserved and the people will be there in 20 minutes. they offer for us to sit there and we pass.
who shows up to claim that table? uh, kristen dunst and non famous friends. seriously. we curse ourselves for not sitting there and meeting kristen. its ok, night still early.
the craziest thing happens. apparently, some old dude "harassed" some asian girl. what we witness is the aftermath. the chick runs over to his table, throws her drink at him (completely missing btw) and proceeds to call him a limp dick viagra user. good times.
the bouncers proceed to kick hm out like jazz in fresh prince style (after the old man challenges them to fight). so we then politely ask the waitress to inhabit the old mans table (which happens to be next to kristen dunst). she gives it to us. score.
then guess who joins kristen dunst? samantha ronson (former lindsay lohan beau who is actually a very good looking dyke). and adam levine (of maroon 5). score.
and who do we see at the bar sitting by himself? john mayer!
john mayer introduces himself to kristen, samantha, and adam. this shocks me. don't all famous people just know each other? isn't there some secret handshake? i guess not. samantha proceeds to sit on john mayers lap. i think he's going to try to make her change teams.
samantha ronson does "bette davis eyes", good perfomance. adam levine sings "let's stay together". he absolutely kills it. gives me new respect for maroon 5. john mayer does "humpty dance" but he's off beat. stick to the slow jams john. the funny thing is when they announced them the dj's say "adam l" or "samantha r" or "john m". john m, thats me too!
good night then we take off. as i am waiting to exit the parking lot, i see john and adam (first name basis son) arguing outside brass monkey. john is apologizing for something and adam is not having it. good times.
happy birthday maria cecilia!
1994: freshman year college: 135
1999: graduated college: 200
2002: la marathon: 140
2009: after pi and ny: 175
i have noticed my weight start to fluctuate in the wrong direction. seriously, just didn't like how i looked in the pictures. i have always been sort of a weight fluctuator but i'm trying to nip this in the bud now. i think ideally, as a marathon runner, etc. my weight is best around 145-150. thats my goal. so how do i get there?
right now its a good thing that i'm sorta between jobs. i can work out alot and watch what i eat. the working out/running is really picking up with the la marathon in march. so i'm upping my mileage and workouts for that. the big issue for me is diet. (like it is for most people)
rr found this online and shared it with me. i have been trying to follow it. so far, so good.
His advice is fairly self-explanatory and nothing extraordinary:
Breakfast. Gluten and wheat free cereal, sliced almonds and almond or rice milk. (If you don't have the sensitivities I have look for a high fiber cereal. At least 4 grams of fiber.) I will also have a whole fruit smoothie or an apple, banana or orange. Green tea.
Lunch. A salad with grilled chicken or fish, vegetables, raw nuts and dried fruit. I will also have fruit afterwards.
Dinner. Grilled or baked fish or chicken with vegetables. Sometimes I'll have brown rice.
Again, plan ahead. If you get hungry between meals have a plan... My snack foods are dried fruit, whole almonds or whole cashews. All natural, raw foods energy bars. Raw vegetables like carrots and celery. Whole fruit or whole fruit smoothies.
He does offer a couple good nuggets of unusual information and advice:
If you feel like you need electrolytes coconut water has the highest concentration of electrolytes.
I feel if your diet is consistent and well balanced (think long term rather than short term) it isn't so important what you eat right before you play or the night before because your energy levels and recovery will be on target from the quality of your previous three to seven days of meals.
I feel there are two areas of life that are greatly overlooked, misunderstood or not credited with their importance in our ability to reach our optimal levels of performance and also our greatest quality of everyday life. Diet and sleep.
I believe that eating six smaller meals a day is more healthful than eating three larger meals a day.
When we're traveling the snack foods can be extremely important to take with because you often will get stuck at a restaurant or hotel without good options.
something that my boy c-lo posted online:
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." - Jeremiah 29:11
word. 2010.
its 3:55 am now. i have been awake since about 2am. telling myself, "but it's 6:55 pm in the philippines" is little consolation right now. i just wish i could sleep.
i'm not a big tv guy. truth be told, in my apartment, i have an old tv but i have no cable. if i want to watch something like a football game or the lakers, i'll head over to my folks.
anyways in ny, during downtime at the hotel room i caught some shows for the first time.
jersey shore of course is what everyone is talking bout. situps + salads + steroids = six pack=situation? yeah i'm a math guy so that makes sense to me.
also was watching for the love of ray j for the first time. i realize this isn't a new show. but i realized if i was on a dating show like this, i would be horrible. i would probably be kicked off the first day.
i don't think i'm a great first impressions guy. which sucks obviously b/c you only have that one chance to make a first impression. i think part of it is i'm the classic overthinker. you know paralysis by analysis? (like dawson in dawsons creek).
crap, dawsons creek reference at 4am. definitely, time to try to get some more sleep.
when i first had a website it was when the internet was (relatively) new. this was around '97 and who had really had a website? now its different. EVERYONE has a web presence, whether its twitter, myspace, facebook, etc.
with the advent of microblogging (you know, 140 characters or less), there just isn't room for traditional blogs anymore. or is there? i don't know where burgs.net fits in the grand scheme of the internet anymore. in this a.d.d. society with reality tv, etc i don't think anyone wants anything more than just a status update, a tweet or a text message. i won't even go into what ever happened to "snail mail" or actually mailed letters.
i think like anything else, my website has to reinvent itself. sometimes forced change isnt such a bad thing, it forces us to evolve even if we didn't think we needed it. but maybe it did (i'm talking about my website of course.)
on november 3rd, 2006, i blogged about my goals at the time for the next 15 years. lets revisit where i am at and see if there is any tweaking necessary:
sports
1) qualify for the boston marathon: this is huge for me. i don't think you understand. i've done the math. the last 5 years, i've ran about 30-35 miles a week. thats 7800-9100 total miles. thats alot. anyways if (or when) i ever accomplish this, i think i'll break down into tears b/c its something that deep down inside, i'm not sure if i'm not physically capable of qualifying. which makes me want it even more.
2) hike up to the summit of mt whitney: last years trip was pretty dissapointing. i want to get to the top. i hate losing.
travel
1) ny. i know its retarded, but i've never been.
2) japan. video games, toys, sushi, crazy fetishes. oh wait.
3) bali. i think i saw wild on: bali once and i was sold.
work
1) reach upper middle management: as i've spoken to my friends before, middle management is the best. you have people under you, you get paid a decent amount, but if shit really hits the fan, you have a boss that takes the heat. and you don't have to worry about stressing and bringing work home. thats living the life.
2) open my own business: i know this seems contradictory, but if i was stressing over something that i owned and profited from it would be worth it. who knows, maybe this means burgs.net being a profitable online business. maybe it means opening up a diner or a bar. or even a taco truck.
personal/family
1) go back to school. this might be for a masters, or it might just mean community college classes at night. i just want to keep learning. but this isn't as easy as it sounds. i think i have a phobia of school. i seriously have had many nightmares about being a student, showing up to a final and realizing that i don't know anything. they are pretty traumatic. i know its just in my head but still, its there.
2) get married. thank goodness this is called the next 15 and not the next 1.
3) have kids. see above.
if i've learned anything during this year, its this:
sometimes expectations ≠ reality. and sometimes, thats ok.
this has been something on my mind since i got here. you see here, when you go to the mall or a restaurant, you are greeted, "hello mam sir." this is even if you are by yourself.
so after much deliberation i have come up with 3 reasons why:
1) filipinos aren't that great at pronouns. i know my mom calls guys "her" and girls "him" all the time. this whole mam sir thing eliminates that issue.
2) sometimes its hard to tell. there are alot of umm...people in drag here. so yeah, this way, they won't make a mistake when trying to identify gender.
3) their employee manual probably states, "Make sure to friendly greet guests by saying, 'hello mam/sir.'". so they probably just take this literally and say the whole thing.
anyone have any further insight on this mamsir phenomenon here in the philippines?
